Sunday afternoon choral Concert
Karl Jenkins – ‘The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace’
Sunday 24th November 2024 at 4.00pm
Baptist Church, Hockliffe Street, Leighton Buzzard LU7 1EZ
To mark both the 80th birthday year of composer Karl Jenkins and the 80th anniversary of D-Day the Singers presented an hour-long Sunday afternoon concert comprising Jenkins's ‘The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’. This popular work was composed in 2000 and commissioned by the Royal Armouries Museum to commemorate the millennium.
The poignancy and relevance of the work is heightened by the fact that the CD recording of the works was released on 10th September 2001, the day before the tragic events in the United States. Sadly its relevance continues in today's world.
The concert followed on from the successful choral workshop the Linsdale Singers’ presented at the beginning of September which was based around movements from ‘The Armed Man’. The Choir was delighted that a few singers from other choirs who were at the workshop joined the Choir for this performance.
We were pleased to be back in the Baptist Church and joined again by Paul Daggett our regular organist who is also Director of Music at the Baptist Church. As well as the organ, the performance was accompanied by cello, piano, two trumpets and percussion.
The performance was very successful. Many audience members commented on how moving the performance was and how well the choir sang.
Tickets were £10 (free for under 18s) and were available at the door or online in advance
