The Linsdale Singers visit Peterborough Cathedral

19th/20th July 2014

Over the weekend of 19th/20th July 2014 the Singers visited Peterborough Cathedral. The Singers had only been to this cathedral once before – this was exactly 25 years ago over the weekend 22/23 July 1989 and was the first ever visit the Singers made to a cathedral – so the Choir’s 2014 visit was quite special. To mark the occasion, some of the music the Choir sang was the same as they sung all those years ago.

The Choir sang in four services – Evensong at 3.30pm on the Saturday, and Mattins at 9.15am, Eucharist at 10.30am and Evensong at 3.30pm on the Sunday.

As usual it was a very intense weekend with lots of music to sing, but these cathedral visits are always a highlight of the Singers’ year, and this year’s visit was no exception. All the arrangements, both with the cathedral and the hotel, went very smoothly and we were looked after very well. The threatened thunderstorms held off on both days, although the weather was very hot and muggy. The air conditioning in the hotel (The Park Inn) was very welcome!

As in previous visits, some members of the Choir travelled to Peterborough on the Friday. On the way they met for lunch in a pub and then went on to Crowland Abbey to sing informally a range of sacred pieces from the Choir’s repertoire.

The Cathedral Square in the heart of the city, just beyond the West end of the Cathedral was hosting the first ever Portuguese Street Festival. There were stalls, arts and crafts, barbeques and musical entertainment on both days and the centre was crowded with festival goers.
